Amazing Africa

Africa Since 1800 (5th edition) details Africa since the 1800s as the title states. First the book starts off with historical and religious differences between the different African countries. Then it goes into Europe's colonization of Africa, and the various wars fought and the minerals and resources in each country. Afterwards the road to independence and life after colonization. Because of colonization and the lack of educational institutions in Africa, the different countries lack behind the rest of the world in many things. In addition, the high rate of HIV/AIDS in various parts of the continent kills 20 to 30 year olds and leaves many children as orphans. I bought this book so I could learn about the history of the diverse continent of Africa as well as current events, this book contained both. Also there are many interesting facts and figures such as in the year 2000, there were 10 million phones across Africa and half of them were in South Africa (pg 372 paperback edition). The paperback edition has 382 pages of reading. This book covers the complete continent of Africa and is a valuable and informative read.

Africa course

I used approximately 3/4 of this text in order to teach/create a new course on the Scramble for Africa for my high school students. The book provided the students with detailed information grouped into geographical categories of Africa. It also clearly linked cause and effect and relationships among events. As any text, it could be a bit dry and sometimes hard to follow for high school students due to the amount of details provided, but it did a particularly great job explaining the evolution and revolution of South Africa. I intend to continue using it and if you're a teacher considering a text for this time period, this was by the far the best I could find that focused on this time period - 4 1/2 stars! Feel free to contact me for thoughts on teaching about this amazing continent - I learned a lot during this first-time teaching process and look forward to learning more when I teach it again.

short and dense

Weighing in at less than three hundred pages on a history as convoluted and mysterious to Americans as that of Africa it still manages to convey at massive amounts of information. This is also it's main weakness dumping extras like style and readability it gets incredibly frustrating at times. The subject is fascinating though. The sections on the approaches taken by the various holding countries to release their holdings and transfer rule are fascinating.

After reading this book I can honestly state that I could relate to everything the author has written as I too am a police officer. In my 20 year career as a police officer (seven as a Sgt), I too have experienced similar scenarios. Therefore I know this book is genuine.

It is very apparent by this 20 year veteran, that the author has been thorough in his research because of the numeorus documented inteviews of actual police officers. I am very impressed that he has actually taken the time to conduct these interviews. As a result the reader will learn about 101 actual incidents which support the 101 reasons in the book.

In my humble opinion, it is only after one has read this book that they will know for sure that police work is or is not for them. "101 Reasons Why You Should Not Become A Cop" is unabashedly honest and very revealing. It is a must read for the aspiring cop and for those who simply want to understand what todays cops are experiencing on a daily basis.

The bottom line is that police work is not for the faint of heart but for those who are willing to sacrifice a good portion of their lives trying to stop bad guys without even making a dent into the criminal world.

I fully recommend the reading of this book.

Funny but True

This book is funny and yet I see much truth in it. I've been on the job for 7+ years now and can really relate with much of the stories in this. I took my copy of this in and left it on the table at work so our dispatchers could read it. The ones that are aspiring to become officers I made sure saw it and recognized that much of it is true.. If you want glamor and thanks at every call you are going into the wrong career. It's not like CSI or any of those other shows either.. It's hard and long hours on every holiday, birthday, anniversary, nice day, ect. I try to explain that to people but.. this book does a good job at explaining for me. Fun read like I said.

Administrative Nightmares & More

Most of this book revolves around administrative issues; all the terrible things that can happen to a cop during his career. A lot of this stuff is avoidable and that's why I think this book should be standard issue with the rest of the training material a cop recives at the police academy. This book talks about everything from crazy girlfriends filing DV charges against her (cop) boyfriend to paper hanging supervisors who are out to get the officer fired, and 99 more advntures that can befall a decent cop. I hope the author of this book writes a follow up as there are certainly more negative issues that could be talked about. As an example, the explosion of video technology-- just about every citizen now carries around a video camera in the form of a cell phone. Cops should always assume they're words and actions are being recorded by someone, and attorneys can have a field day in court with this evidence. Gone are the days of my word against yours and the cop always winning.
