Good book for starting CA

I have used this book for my graduate course I have taken a while back. For someone who had never studied conversation analysis (CA), a lot of terms used in the book was a bit too difficult to intuitively understand the concept. But once I was more familiar with the concept of CA, this book became a lot more accessible and easy to understand.

There are many examples for each concept, and they help to understand it better.
I'm not an expert of CA, but I definitely recommend this book for someone who wants to learn more about CA.

The Best Introduction to CA

I have read several introductory books on conversation analysis, and found that this one is the best one available thus far.
One of the most valuable things that an introduction to methodology should accomplish is, I think, to shed light on what sort of insights naive readers or students can expect by analyzing conversation, which otherwise will be nothing more than drudgery. With that respect, this book sucessfully ignites interest in CA and offers ample vivid examples.

This is a great introduction to CA. We have been reading it in a reading group with several technologists for whom this has been their first exposure to CA. They are finding the book very clear and the examples many examples and Sidnell's analysis of them show just how CA is done in practice. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
ANDRAS GERO was born in Budapest in 1952. He is the director of the Hapsburg History Institute and Professor at the ELTE University Faculty of Economics and Social History. He also lectures regularly at the Central European University. His research territories are the era of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the development of the middle class and the history of symbolic politics. He is editor in chief of Budapesti Negyed and a member of the editorial committee of Szazadok.

great account of the austro hungarian empire

this book is very good and deserves your attention this book covers the last 50 years of the
habsburg empire and there is in the first but pretty long chapter that covers the habsburg empire
from its begining to the creation of the austro hungarian dual monarchy as the book totaly points out
the austro hungarian empire lasted longer then the successor states at the end of world war one
and even though the monarchy has vanished close to a century ago remeberance of the empire
still continue to fasinate people to this day what is interesting is that the austro hungarian empire
had produced some of the most brilliant minds of the late 19th and early 20th centuries
with people like sigmund freud , great military thinkers like conrad von hotzendorf
and archduke karl, franz ferdinand, and it is interesting to note that might not be menched in the book
is the fact that most of germanys scientist and enginiers during world war 2 came from the former dual monarchy
they also helped the united states after world war 2 and today when there now exists a european union
which some have said is a modified version of the austro hungarian empire

In this study, Robert Eisen breaks new ground by analyzing how six medieval Jewish philosophers approached the Book of Job. These thinkers covered are Saadiah Gaon, Moses Maimonides, Samuel ibn Tibbon, Zerahiah Hen, Gersonides, and Simon ben Zemah Duran. Eisen explores each philosopher's reading of Job on three levels: its relationship to interpretations of Job by previous Jewish philosophers, the way in which it grapples with the major difficulties in the text, and its interaction with the author's systematic philosophical thought. Eisen also examines the resonance between the readings of Job of medieval Jewish philosophers and those of modern biblical scholars. What emerges is a portrait of a school of Joban interpretation that was creative, original, and at times surprisingly radical. Eisen thus demonstrates that medieval Jewish philosophers were serious exegetes whom scholars cannot afford to ignore. By bringing a previously-overlooked aspect of these thinkers' work to light, Eisen adds new depth to our knowledge of both Jewish philosophy and biblical interpretation.

Very Crowleyan in all the best ways; an excellent look at the yogic philosophies

Definitely one of the most readable of Crowley texts, perhaps because they were all lectures, Yoga is not an intro to yoga but rather a discussion of its tenets. AC digs into astrological principles, physics, esoteric knowledge, and links it all to magick.

This is a continuation of Book 4, Part 1, but is more approachable for the layman. When I was in my Crowley phase in the mid-90s, reading all I could find, I got used to his style and it was all pretty digestible. After 15 years away, many of his texts seem rather arcane again without enough warm-up, but Yoga stands out as one of his most lucid and clear tomes.

The first part, Yoga For Yahoos, is more fun than part two, Yoga For Yellowbellies, but both are worth reading, and at a mere 80 pages it's hardly backbreaking literary labor. There are plenty of very profound thoughts here, of varying depths, and you will not leave this work without many new and useful ideas.

If you've done some yoga and know your Patanjali, etc, then move along to Aleister and see what you can learn from one of the most unusual and fascinating minds of the past hundred years.

PS My copy of this small, blue hardcover book, published by the Sangreal Foundation in 1969, was in perfect shape for all of five bucks when I found it in some dusty corner in some old shoppe a few years back. Look around at your local tiny used book stores and you might find this at a fraction of the 75 the sole seller here wants. It's a wonderful edition and blows the paperback version out of the water. It feels like an AC book should, and has that old book smell that makes the Crowleyan message even more apropos.
