Paul E. McMahon (pemcmahon@acm.org), Principal, PEM Systems (www.pemsystems.com) has been an independent consultant since 1997 helping organizations increase agility and process maturity. He has taught software engineering at Binghamton University, conducted workshops on engineering processes and management and has published more than 45 articles and multiple books including "Integrating CMMI and Agile Development: Case Studies and Proven Techniques for Faster Performance Improvement." Paul is a co-author of "The Essence of Software Engineering: Applying the SEMAT Kernel." Paul is a Certified Scrum Master and a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. His insights reflect 24 years of experience working for companies such as Link Simulation and Lockheed Martin, and 17 years of consulting/coaching experience. Paul has been a leader in the SEMAT initiative since its initial meeting in Zurich in 2010.

A creative way to introduce the Essence

In “15 Fundamentals…” Paul is first stepping back to explain the problem the software engineering community needs to solve. He does this in a non-biased way by examining many of the popular existing approaches and improvement frameworks, then discussing where organizations have gone off track in the past. As he presents this information he also presents a vision for a framework that could potentially help organizations in ways that past approaches have fallen short. What I find most appealing about this approach is that it allows the reader to consider different options to solving the problem without jamming a solution down the reader’s throat.
Another aspect I particularly like about this book is how Paul presents his 15 fundamentals with rationale that is hard to disagree with, and – more importantly-- he explains why many organizations fail over and over to follow these fundamentals even when they know they work. This all sets the stage for a new kind of framework that requires you to think differently about software development and creates the vision for that framework without telling you the detailed implementation. In Part III of the book he does presents a framework that meets the vision and that is the Essence framework.
Whether you care about CMMI, Six Sigma, Lean, Agile, Kanban, Essence or any other improvement framework, this book will give you an objective look at where the software community is today and why the approaches many organizations have been taking to date have failed at achieving the high performance promised payback. It will also give you insights into how the Essence framework will help your own personal performance as well as your organization’s performance.

Paul provides very practical advice for improving personal and team performances in software engineering in this book based on his extensive consulting experiences. He sheds new light on the ways how software engineering practitioners can apply patterns, checklists and measurements to improve their performance immediately, incrementally and continuously. He has been deeply involved in developing the guide for practical use of the new OMG standard, Essence--the kernel and language for software engineering methods, and suggests in this book a very smart way to use Essence for better decisions and better practices in software engineering endeavors.

He has taken a unique look at the process improvement world which, to be honest, I felt had started to grow a little stale, and found a way to say here is why you still care. Once every few years, "someone who knows" adds meaningfully to the formidable array of Gurdjieff-related books. This is an essential book, in any sense of the word. Since Amazon has been kind enough to post an excerpt online, I will not say any more, but by all means have a look. John Anderson and Marshall May have done a superb job of sharing the ideas of Jerry Brewster, and these ideas are formulated exceedingly well.

The essence of martial science...

Smith follows up volume one in this Wing Chun trilogy with another fine effort, this time detailing the techniques and tactics of the style. The material in this book can be used creatively as a guide to the applications of the forms described in volume one. This edition also contains an introduction to Chi Sau exercises, a vital component to Wing Chun training. What I like most about Smith is his open-minded perspective; in this book, he sights some of the strengths and weaknesses of the style, and he's not afraid to suggest solutions for oversights such as fighting outside trapping range and the lack of power strikes (readers might also consider a Wing Chun practitioner's vulnerability to a skilled wrestler's attack, an issue not addressed here). Another excellent analysis of this practical and highly efficient martial art.

simplistic and poorly illustrated

I agree with the other 1 star reviewer in that this book very poorly illustrates proper technique and is very, very basic. Fortunately, I read it at the book store and therefore did not waste any money.
When I found the book on Amazon while searching for other Wing Chun books, I was very surprised to see such good reviews for it. Of course, it could just be the author or friends of the author ;)
Especially watch out for anybody who tries to tell you you can learn the martial arts from a book - you can not. You can learn about it, but without qualified instruction, you can't learn how to do it.

Please, buy another book

I don't know why I keep on buying this kind of manual and after having read this book I've got a good reason to stop. 70 pages of chatting that 'any master' can do. The pictures don't show what the written should want to explain. They don't have a dynamical sequence and it's difficult to realize the words' author. 1 star is enough.

The Letters of LTG Kuribayashi

LTG Tadamichi Kuribayashi, an officer of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, was one of those rare individuals who seem born to become soldiers. Displaying a strong will and unorthodox tactics during the struggle for Iwo Jima in early 1945, he nevertheless was possessed of a rare humility and ingrained honor that made him a highly-respected leader to both his subordinates and enemies.

"Picture Letters from the Commander in Chief" is a very short read. It is simply a collection of LTG Tadamichi Kuribayashi's letters to his family during his time abroad as a young military man and his letters from Iwo Jima island. Reading the actual letters portrayed so movingly in "Letters From Iwo Jima" serves to round out one's understanding of who Kuribayashi was as a man.

There are no insights to his tactics for the Iwo Jima battle and only a small window is opened into his personal views on the Pacific War in one of his last letters from the forsaken island. The rest of them were written and sketched by him for benefit of his wife and children. As his son Taro and later, his infant daughter Takako, were very young when the letters were written oftentimes the subjects were light and focused on Kuribayashi's observations of his time in the United States or anything light-hearted he could report from the dismal island of sulfur that is Iwo Jima.

The letters reveal above all a loving and doting father, who despite enormous distances from his children still cautioned them on discipline. Preparing for the Battle of Iwo Jima, which would cost him his life, he still found time to correct his Tako-chan's grammatical errors in her letters to him and apologized to his wife for not fixing the draft in their kitchen during his last leave. His occasional snipes at his wife for not writing him or for the paucity of packaged herring roe sent to him during his stay in America will elicit a smile from any married man. His love for his wife and children permeate the letters, particularly in his first letter from Iwo Jima, when he instructs his children to grow fast and take care of their mother after his death.

"Picture Letters from the Commander in Chief," if read as an appendix to Kumiko Kakehashi's powerful portrayal of Iwo Jima in "So Sad to Fall in Battle," serves to further deepen an understanding of who Tadamich Kuribayashi was as a man.

This is a very simple book. As noted, it is a collection of letters sent to a commander's wife,son and daughter with illustrations that he drew by hand while he was visiting America in the late 20's. It reads very quickly since it is virtually a picture book. It is very moving to read the thoughts of a military commander who knew he wasn't going to return home and how he expresses his love for his children. I've read it once and went through it again. If you enjoyed seeing the movie Letters From Iwo Jima then you will really enjoy this book.

Glimpse into the Private Life of an Enemy Commander.

The book is a compilation of Kuribayashi's letters home to his children during his military career. It's a very touching glimpse into the heart of a father from another culture who is separated from his children and is trying to have some kind of communication with them. Each letter is illustrated with Kuribayashi's own hand and each provides for the children an illustration of their father's everyday life in a foreign land, taking a stroll, riding in a car, even taking a bath.

Kuribayashi encourages his children to do well and to be good to each other and to listen to their mother. His last letter from Iwo Jima is especially sad as you can tell he expects never to see his family again.

A must for all gardeners!

I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in gardening or anyone who gardens. Although the concept was developed by Ruth decades ago, it is 100% relevant for today's gardeners can be applied to any level of gardening. Ruth's personality comes alive in her writing and I felt more like I was getting gardening lesson with a close relative of yesteryear than merely reading a book. I have already recommended this book to gardening friends and will refer to its wisdom and advice many times in the future.

Very encouraging read. Works great in zone 9b

This has been very helpful to me. I was getting overwhelmed with my overgrowing neglected garden. Reading her work made me feel better about trimming it and leaving it in place to work as organic matter. I had been uprooting it and burning it. I'm growing some great watermelon and okra now in zone 9b.

EXCELLENT OVERVIEW WITH SUPERB SAMPLES

I do not know what kind of background the previous reviewer has but as artist and art teacher I highly recommend this book. The idea of valuing it according to price, like some kind of bean counter is absurd.
The book covers the fundamentals and the drawings are superb. It is easy to carry and also serves as a continuous source of style and inspiration.
As for the price it is worth every penny. If you want beautiful though realistic images to act as an ideal and have enough intelligence not to need Parental consent to see the nudes in the book please DISREGARD THE FATUOUS AND INCREDULOUS REVIEW ABOVE.
The book dose exactly what it claims and dose so with great art, style and composition. Craig Nelson is one of the most accomplished draftsman of this era and has made, and shows great choices.
Need to be taken by the hand through everything pertaining to drawing then head for your nearest art school, as no book can do what a serious series of classes in drawing fundamentals can do. However don't trash a perfectly fine and inspirational book for the price or the heck of it.

I almost finished with this book and have concluded it is well worth the money.

It has a lot of information useful to the drawing student that I have not found elsewhere and I have a lot of drawing/art books.

Subjects are a quick and dirty summary except fot the demonstrations which cover maybe three pages and take you step by step through the process of makeing the drawing.

Begining Artist must read

I have just finished reading this book. I am an artist and I plan to give this book to young relative of mine for Christmas. It covers every aspect of drawing in an easy to understand way. I also like how the author combines other mediums with and in his drawings. The challenge to use several mediums in a single project is great. I will refer to this book many times when I work on my projects as well.
I would recommend this book to anyone, young or old, beginner or advanced who wishes to create a piece of art they can be proud to display.
