Elliot Fratkin has written an insightful, enjoyable, and very readable book about his fieldwork and life-long friendship with a family of diviners ( laibon ) in northern Kenya. The work is strongly autobiographical, recounting how a young, rebellious American anthropologist in the 1970s found himself conducting dissertation research among Ariaal, a Samburu-related nomadic community of northern Kenya. He sees his work as both an ethnography of the laibons... and a memoir—a lifelong search for belonging. not just for academics

Yes, I read it for a class, but I've since passed it on to my parents who are also enjoying it. The author is writing the book from the perspective of an experienced academic, using his field notes from his first field experience, so we get the perspective of both. He blends narrative and insight so that it does not read like a text, yet educates the reader to the complexities of the situations and the anthropological perspective. He is writing about a place and people he clearly cares deeply for, and has insight that is important for understanding such issues as climate change, foreign aid (that is NOT helpful if the providers don't understand the local situation) and acculturation.
NOTE: even the non-readers in the class enjoyed it, and discussions were lively..

I knew Elliot in Kenya, and heard some of these stories firsthand, but it was immensely fun reading how all those stories fit together, and get a more in depth glimpse into Elliot's research, way back when.

INCREIBLE

Es de las mejores novelas que he leído, el desarrollo de dos mundos, las historias separadas pero al mismo tiempo unidas, la soledad. Aparte de la estructura del libro que hace que no puedas dejar de leerlo. Sin temor a equivocarme creo que es la mejor novela de Murakami, sus obsesiones llevadas al extremo.

Mucho material de sobra....

Sin ser un gran fan de Murakami, me parece que nunca habia hecho algún mal trabajo con sus historias, siempre llenas de un estilo narrativo ágil, imaginativo, en ocasiones lleno de surrealismos, con personajes muy bien elaborados. Hasta hoy. Me parece que en el intento de crear una obra magna más bien nos entrega un bulto de libro, demasiado largo y con demasiado material de sobra. No es que esté en contra de las novelas extensas, pero hacer un ejercicio de narrar una historia coherente, cautivante, que mantenga un ritmo y una ruta clara, no es tan fácil. El inicio de la historia es Murakami al 100, pero muy pronto, hacia la mitad del libro o antes incluso, se vuelve la historia floja y sosa. En los dos primeros libros, consigue mantener al lector atrapado a pesar de sus defectos, cosa muy diferente con el tercer libro que francamente esta de sobra, algunas de las líneas de historia francamente están muy sobradas e insípidas (como la historia de Ushikawa, personaje del que bien podría prescindirse, pero consume un tercio del tercer libro), muchos cabos sueltos, muchas tramas sin ruta alguna. De los tres libros bien se pudo haber editado la obra para caber en dos volúmenes sin problema alguno, incluso se le podría recortar mucha más paja. Evitarlo.

Es el primer libro que leo de este autor y ha sido un agradable descubrimiento.
Sus protagonistas son una fuente inagotable de sorpresas. Uno se queda con las ganas de saber mas sobre ellos.
El unico 'pero' que le pongo al libro es que a veces da la sensacion de que exagera con las descripciones y que hay un poco de paja que se podia haber evitado.

Too Much of a Good Thing is a very interesting read done in flowing narrative. It disseminates data used to study the subject matter in a way that is entertaining and easy to read.

I would recommend this as a supplementary reading book for students that are interested not only in interpersonal relations but planning, geography and GIT fields.
For planning it allows students to understand the changing society in America where the Smart Phone and devices have begun to distract not only pedestrians but drivers as well. Do traditional traffic calming techniques have an impact if the drivers are distracted? Do we need to add more wifi hot spots for transit users to rise the utility of our services? Travel Behavior can be altered by the use of Smart Devices to deliver more information to the masses.
Geography, this is a great view into our modern regional and human geography. The book explores how people are using the devices and how they interact or lack of, with their environment.
For GIT, Smart Devices are a growing technology that is allowing geographers, and developers to disseminate our maps in a dynamic and prolific manner than ever before in the past.

I plan to use it in my courses in the future and I hope that it gets updated as technology updates as well.

"Too Much of a Good Thing: Are You Addicted to Your Smartphone?" is an quick yet thought-provoking read. Research-backed information is presented in an interesting & easy-to-understand manner, and is well balanced with humor. I particularly appreciated the short quizzes & "Food for Thought" included throughout the book.
Dr. Roberts has inspired me to be MUCH more conscious of my phone usage. Everyone with a smartphone should read it!

Stockholm based writer Carl Magnus Palm is recognised as the world’s foremost Abba historian. His earlier books include Abba: The Complete Recording Sessions, which was based on extensive interviews with all four Abba members, From Abba to Mamma Mia!, a collaboration with Anders Hanser, photographer and close friend of Abba. Palm was involved in putting together the Abba CD box set Thank You For the Music and has also contributed liner notes to several Abba related CDs most notably the remastered version of the compilation album Abba Gold and the re-issue of Abba’s original albums.

This is the One to read! A really Great book about ABBA, ..

I wanted an in-depth biography that adequately described this marvelous band without omitting the aspects that might be viewed as being uncomplimentary, or controversial. This book has been updated to address every fact, story, interview, or rumor concerning any of the band members right up to 2014. Every possible item from Bjorn & Bennie's folk music days in the Sixties right up to Agnetha's romantic endeavors as described in those less notable magazines at the local corner store. There are so many accounts of the intricate aspects of each member's life with painstaking efforts made to get every related factor adequately covered; that you may find that it is more information than you wanted to know!

I am very pleased with the way the book is written, in that it permits the reader to experience each period as it occurred without unnecessary foreshadowing. It is a long book, packed with information.

A masterpiece, nearly encyclopedic concerning this band, the history of the group, and the creation of that wonderful music. After having read it; I actually find myself to be a greater fan of the band, and each member than prior to reading it, though always I admired that music.

The author wrote the definitive book on this band, and how their epic journey transpired!

Very Informative

My favorite genre is biography, and this has to be one of the most comprehensive bios I've ever read. Times four! Their individual stories go back to each of their family's history, then detailed career histories, their manager's life history...before we even begin to discuss ABBA. Not only is it full of quotes from interviews, it's filled with statistics. I can't imagine the amount of time the author spent on research.
The writing style makes an easy read and it's not salacious or opinionated. It's just the story of the band members, their talents, their vision and their progress to world domination. Their personal lives are laid bare but mainly they tell their own story through quotations. This book is valuable to fans because prior to the internet it was almost impossible (in the U.S.) to get much real information on these artists.

Carl Magnus Palm did a lot of work researching Abba, but he lost the story along the way. Instead of getting to know the band members, he relates who, what, when, where, and sometimes why. The facts were there, but they lacked any emotional coloring.
