Thea Stilton and the Star Castaways

I'm a mother and grandmother, and took on a hobby of collecting books for a local school. The librarian recommended, among other books, the Geronimo Stilton series. All she said was they (these books) had a mouse on the cover...we talked briefly.

I've collected quite a few of these, so far, including Thea Stilton and the Star Castaways. I was very attracted to this book, because of the cover, showing the characters in zero gravity. Really cool, to be sure. Often, I read the books I collect for the kids, cover to cover, and this is one that I have read.

I know this sounds idiotic, because I am well into adulthood, but I had a little bit of trouble following the sequencing of this book. It seemed to me that somewhere into it, there was a little repetition, but that doesn't matter a whole lot.

Overall, I rate this book extrememly high, for several reasons.

1)One of these reasons is simply that any kid would love it, absolutely love it, because it's cool beyond imagination--a kid would want to read, and keep reading. It makes a person feel good, plain and simple.

2)Another thing is, there are facts in this book, like the one about using hydrogen as an energy source, that are very educational. There is also information about going up in a jet, to reproduce a lack of gravity--just as NASA does, in reality. Other facts, too. Good for stretching young minds.

3)But, the greatest reason I recommend this book for kids, and enjoyed it myself, is that the colorful illustrations of space are more than awesome. The illustrations are realistic, and nearly inspirational, and the book as a whole is really good, too.

About the Author
Robert Roswell Palmer, a former professor of history at Princeton University, was educated at the University of Chicago and Cornell University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1934. His books include Catholics and Unbelievers in Eighteenth-Century France, Twelve Who Ruled: The Year of the Terror in the French Revolution, and the two-volume Age of the Democratic Revolution, the first volume of which won the Bancroft Prize. A former president of the American Historical Association, he has received honorary degrees from universities around the world, and was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli International Prize for History in 1990. He and his wife live in Newtown, Pennsylvania.

Joel Colton taught in Duke University’s history department for forty-two years. He was educated at City College of New York and Columbia University, which awarded him his Ph.D. in 1950. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has been a Phi Beta Kappa lecturer and the recipient of Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships. His books include Léon Blum: Humanist in Politics, for which he received a Mayflower Award. He has cowritten, with R. R. Palmer, the previous eight editions of A History of the Modern World. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.

Lloyd Kramer is a professor of history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His books include Threshold of a New World: Intellectuals and the Exile Experience in Paris, 1830–1848 and Lafayette in Two Worlds: Public Cultures and Personal Identities in an Age of Revolutions, which won the Gilbert Chinard Prize and the Annibel Jenkins Biography Prize. He lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

This is THE text of Modern European History

It is difficult to add to what reviewers have already provided. I used this text when I was a classroom AP teacher for a number of reasons. Among those reasons was that while most K-12 textbooks are the product of a committee, (committee- a terrestrial life form having at least six legs and no brain.) this book is largely the work of the late Dr. Robert Roswell Palmer. It was written as if the author felt that the history of Modern Europe was not a collection of chapters but rather a story, a narrative to be read the way one reads a novel. There is a continuity to the writing and an elegance of prose that can only be achieved by a text like this. Dr. Palmer was a wonderful historian and a marvellously accessable teacher who took the time to answer letters personally on his old manual typewriter. His passing is lamented.

Great even for personal use

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history or has a class they need the book for. It provides any information you need, and sometimes information you don't really NEED, but it's interesting the same. It can be a little hard to read at times, and the index isn't very helpful most of the time, but it does what it tells you it will, teaches you about history.

An invaluable resource, A remarkable book

A History of the Modern World is an informative, all-encompassing compendium on European history. I was able to attain a 5 on the AP European History exam independent of teaching instruction and based on this book alone. And yet, even if I hadn't reaped an academic reward from this book, the experience of reading it carries a reward in of itself, for I genuinely feel as though this book changed my perspective on society. As the narrative of European history progresses, from the Renaissance to recent European events, Palmer's eloquent and informative prose allowed me to interpret patterns in social structure, politics, and economics that, I feel, give me a greater perspective on modern society. In that sense, A History of the Modern World is a book that holds great gratification for serious and committed readers- in or outside the classroom.

In this text, Dr. Libes tackles the inter-relationship between all the sciences as they occur in the marine environment. She entertains the most complex concepts with pragmatic efficiency. It is a delight to read and work through, levaing you with a real sense of understanding. Excellent and resourceful, this text is a must for any serious Oceanographer.

Review of "Getting started with Spring Framework".

I found this to be a very good book introducing the Spring Framework. I really wish I had this when I was first learning the Framework some years ago, it would have simplified my work quite a bit and saved me many hours of frustration.

The author, Ashish Sarin J Sharma, is quite knowledgeable and well aquainted with the Framework. His writing is very clear and to the point. I also appreciate the insights he offers when he points out that in the real world one would do this... I would have liked to see a bit more explanation of when one particular technique is better than another in different situations in the real world.

As for the contents, the first chapter, 49 pages, is an obligatory introduction to the basics of the framework and yet manages to get into quite a lot of material. Security, JMX and JMS as well as caching are introduced as well as Dependency Injection, configuration Metadata, and the Spring IoC container. Chapter 1 does not stop there but goes on to discuss "Programming to Interfaces". As I recall I first heard this concept and understood it in a talk by Peter Coad in Washington D.C around 1995. Chapter 1 goes on to discuss the techniques of Bean instantiation, Dependency Injection and bean Scope. This seemed like q kind of whirlwind introduction but the author is pretty good about keeping the explanations clear and in noting what it means in the "real world".

Chapter 2 is a pretty detailed description of the various means available for configuring Spring Beans. I would hesitate to refer to it as an introduction since it seems very comprehensive to me. chapter 3 is a similarly detailed discussion of Dependency Injection and includes some notes as to when one technique might be preferred over another in real world programming. Chapter 4 covers bean customization and definitions quite well. Annotation driven development is covered in Chapter 5 and was very much appreciated in that I have never competeely bought into XML as the end all be al in configuration methods. chapter 6 introuduces Database interactions which includes Springs JDBC modules, Hibernate and springs support for JTA. JMS is the focus of chapter 7 and chapter 8 wraps up with Aspect-oriented programming.

In summary this book represents a very good and practical introduction to the the Spring Framework. The examples in the text and the supporting source code are very clear and include practical advice for most real world situations. I recommend this book for those seeking a good solid and practical approach to learning the Spring Framework.

Nice Book for beginners as well as experienced professionals

I must say this is one of the best and complete book for Spring 3.2. The language is quite simple, easy to understand and the best part I would say are the code examples given in the book. All major concepts like spring core module, dependency injection, spring AOP, Annotation driven development and database integration with spring framework are very well explained. Although all chapters are very good but my personal favorite ones are Ch-6 which introduces database interactions which includes Springs jdbc modules, Hibernate and support for JTA and Ch-8 which is about Aspect-oriented programming.

I highly recommend this book to Spring developers.

Very decent but quite boring

Well, seeing the good reviews on the site, I bought the book but its not as interesting as expected. Though it covers Spring in very much details, it will get boring over time and its definitely not a quick reference kinda book. Too much info about various bean instantiations and filled with lot of simple examples

But one major disadvantage is that it doesnt cover Spring MVC or security which is very crucial these days. Apart from that , quite an average book but lots of info abt beans which we sometimes or never use..

This book fills a crucial gap

So you know how to use your database software, but do you know how to design a good database?

I got lucky when I found this book. I'd been building a database myself after taking a class on MS Access at my local community college. MS Access is so easy to use that I was comfortable and confident. I'd built many related tables and built several queries, forms and reports. No problems. Everything was working fine.

But with each element I added, I got less confident about the DESIGN of my ever-growing database. It was working fine, but were the tables and relationships optimal? As it grew more complex, was I going to make a mistake? Or find a fundamental flaw in my early assumptions? Classes and tutorials on database programs cover design concepts so briefly because they need to cover a lot of details about how to use the program. This book does the exact opposite. It glosses over how to use your software and focuses on design concepts. In the preface, the author says:

"This book does not assume that any particular DBMS [database management system] product will be used [... so ...] all of the concepts are presented in a DBMS-agnostic manner. When learned this way, students come to understand that the fundamentals pertain to any database [...]"

This is why it's shorter than some reviewers seem to think it should be. It isn't "too short." It's "focused." There are plenty of other books that cover the other stuff. This book is clear, concise and accessible. I'm glad it didn't go into more technical details.

It focuses on database fundamentals, design and administration by explaining what each of the following concepts mean and why they're so important: the relational model, normalization, functional dependencies, data modeling, entity-relation model, client-server model, DBA, concurrency control, security, backup and recovery, and even a bit about SQL (the computer language behind your DBMS). You can skip the SQL chapter if you want. I did.

Final word: This book is a quick read and easy to understand. It is a bit pricey, but if it fills a crucial gap in your knowledge, like it did for me, it's well worth the price.

Great introductory book, horrible price

This is by far the best introductory database book I have ever read or used.

Pro

It is written in very clear English.

It covers the basics of database design very well.

It is not overly technical.

One of the best treatments of normalization I have ever seen.

The exercises at the end of each chapter are well thought out.

Con

The book cost way too much ($60) for an introductory textbook.

The use of the term "theme" was changed to "topic" in the 2nd edition. The editing was faulty and the book only defines topic but used both theme and topic. Not a big deal if you used the first edition and know they mean the same thing but it is confusing to students when the book uses the terms interchangably without defining theme.

This is not a reference for database programmers. If you already understand ERD's and normalization don't buy this book it is meant to be an introduction to database basics not a shelf reference.

I like that the does not cover a lot of history. If you want to know a lot about Codd and the evolution of the different normal forms this is not the book for you. If you want a good introduction to databases for a non-technical class this is the best book you will find in my opinion.

Disorganized and Inconvenient

The book has useful information in it, but, as a learning and reference tool, it is very poorly structured. If you know absolutely nothing about databases and plan on completing all the end of chapter exercises from chapter 1 until the very last chapter, then this book is worth 3 stars (average at best). However, if you are taking a college course which doesn't follow this linear structure and have the need to jump around the textbook to complete your homework, this book is a nightmare. It is a nightmare because all of the end of chapter exercises require that you have a partially built Access 2010 or SQL Server database from a previous chapters' exercise. So if you need to learn a specific topic from a specific chapter, you are required to have completed nearly every chapter exercise prior to the lesson of interest. (In case you are wondering, no there aren't online resources which allow you download the needed exercise files).

As I use this book, I consistently find myself being frustrated with how much time I am wasting in order to just begin my homework assignments. Until an edition of this textbook develops a modular, standalone chapter structure, avoid it.

DOMESTICATION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN AFRICAN PROSE FICTION

In his novel, The Voice(1964), Gabriel Okara attempts to translate his native Ijaw language into English. He asserts:"In order to capture the vivid images of African speech I had to eschew the habit of expressing my thoughts first in English" (quoted in Olaniyan and Quayson, 288). Okara's style of writing produces a variety of English in which idiom and syntax are radically altered. The English we read in this novel,is not standardized but domesticated English that constantly suggests the presence of another tongue. This double-voicedness is the quality that makes his fiction unique and challenging to the uninformed reader, the more so because Okara believes that there should be "a Nigerian or West African English which we can use to express our own ideas, thinking and philosophy in our own way" (Olaniyan and Quayson, 288). When Okara writes: "How can I change my inside? I see in my inside that your spoken words are true and straight" (49), it dawns on the non-African Anglophone reader that the writer has relexified and domesticated the English language to make it carry the weight of his Ijaw language and culture. This style of writing stems from the need to solve an immediate artistic problem: that of rendering African concepts, thought patterns and cultural peculiarities into a European language--English. This novel is truly fascinating!

I studied Okara's book more than twenty years ago as a African studies student at the feet of Dr Aderemi Bamikunle.
This my favorite African fiction book, it will capture your mind, renew it and it fly as up never before. I recommend it to anyone who loves freedom and creativity.
