Easy Read

Book was required reading for a construction scheduling course as part of a CE construction management program. Having a background in scheduling (just not construction), this was a very informative and easy read. The author somehow managed to make the topic of scheduling relatively interesting and really drove home the key points. Some good tutorials on MS Project and Primavera as well.

I ordered this book for I class I am currently ...

I ordered this book for I class I am currently taking in school. I am currently using Project '13 at work and at least Project '10 at school. This book is outdated as it only has information on Microsoft Project '07. The other software described in the book are dated as '07 as well. Luckily it turned out we didn't need the book for class and I was able to return it. I gave it two stars because it is almost 8 years outdated.

Fantastic Reissue of "Life" Biography!

This comes in a soft cover or hard cover, and I opted for the soft cover to get the feel of the original. This is an amazing "magazine". I should call it a book, because it is so packed full of information and pictures that I had not seen before. I really didn't expect that, but I couldn't put it down until I had gone all the way through it, and I plan to go through it again this weekend. Of course, it isn't as full of information as some of the books I have that are 200-400 pages long, but I really love what is included. I've been to several of Sir Paul's concerts, and tend to collect more of his memorabilia and works, but I think that this will end up being one of my favorite books about John. Very nice!

plenty of pictures

Even though this book was second hand ex-NY public library the first 18 fell out. I still found the book very informative with plenty of pictures of John covering all of his life both in colour and black & white all. I have bought many items from Amazon over the years and have found the delivery & handing charges of £16.45 well above the average cost for the same sort of item.

Cheever published his first short story at the age of seventeen. He was the recipient of a 1951 Guggenheim Fellowship and winner of a National Book Award for The Wapshot Chronicle in 1958, the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Stories of John Cheever, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and an American Book Award. He died in 1982, at the age of seventy.

oh what a good start to reading john cheever

This book is only a 100 pages and their is so much in a few words. "She was as women go relatively punctual and He had come to believe that punctuality in engagements was an infallible gauge of sexual spontaneity. He had observed that,without exception, women who were tardy for dinner engagements were unconsciously delayed in their erotic transports and that women who were early for lunch or dinner would sometimes climax in the taxi on the way home." IF you like that passage you will enjoy this book. Read more John Cheever.

Poignant, Beautiful, Truthful ... a bit Preachy

This is lovely Cheever. So few pages, and yet so much substance. A book of great truths told through small details. Understanding the difference between those who would or wouldn't stop to pick blackberries on the shoulder of a massive interstate highway ...

I would often pause and reread a paragraph - amazed that something so insightful could be so relatively insignificant within the context of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed myself in this read of an old man, feuding neighbors, love, dissapointment, insecurity, greed ... and American life.

It's not my place to be glad for Cheever, but I felt a sense of satisfaction for him - for the fact that he got this wonderful work done before he died.

My only critique is that the environmentalist message gets a little too preachy and loses the subtlety a message embedded in a novel should have. Mind you - I have no issue with the message - only with the way it is presented towards the end of the story. But like his main character - Cheever was an old man with a purpose. And if he was desperate for his cause - such that he stepped slightly over the line between fiction and nonfiction ... well for that he should be forgiven.

A worthwhile read, which I read on a rainy evening as suggested. It is now 2:00 am, and the book is back on my shelf. I am only saddened that Cheever left no more stories after this one.

A finely crafted novel by an American master.

Oh, What A Paradise It Seems is John Cheever's last novel, published just before his death in June 1982. It differs from his previous works, which mainly focused on suburban commuters, as it tells the story of an older man, but it still retains Cheever's wit and surrealness. The astonishing thing about this book is how deep the story goes, and yet it is only 100 pages long. It would take other authors 400 pages to write this story. It is, as the first sentence says, "A story to be read in bed in an old house on a rainy night."

how to make a telescope

I'm sorry, this is my first review. How could amazon fail to give a good synopsys of this book? Anything by texereau is pretty much a definitive work on telescope making and mirror making. He gives good explanations, gives the math behind stuff. He also gives the best explanations of how to polish and parabolize a mirror that i have seen. Before you buy Ingalls book buy this one.

Most In-Depth Mirror Making Tome

This is the book that scared me away from buying it for years because of the heavy math. The first version I saw was in 1966 and it was a lot thinner than what is available now. I finally picked it up at a used bookstore in 2002. By that time I was not longer making mirrors. I just wanted it for my library.

This book goes into excruciating detail on mirror testing and despite the complexity, I gleaned a few things from it that I wish I'd known twenty years ago when I made my last mirror!

It has a lot of extra material that I'm sure wasn't in the much thinner original version I saw in the 60's. Whoever updated it did an excellent job though even now, as another reviewer noted, much of the info is outdated.

This is another essential book that every mirror maker should have in his or her library. If you are just starting out, get it, but I'd recommend the books by Howard and Thompson over this one unless you are a math wiz. Still, highly recommended.

This book teaches a great lesson

I also read this book when I was young prob not more than about 7-I am 21 now. But unlike the above reader, I did not dislike the book. Yes it was sad, even to this day I have reread the book many times and it is very sad, and may be hard for young children to handle, but it also taught me so much. It showed me that even though there are bad things that happen you can survive and go on, Elizabeth persevered and survived her ordeal. It also showed me how important family and friends are and that you have to respect them. This contiues to be one of my favorite books and Lois Lowry one of my favorite authors.

A tricky one

As everyone else here says, this is a very tragic story. While the book is beautifully written, and the characters very well-drawn, the ending is upsetting and could disturb younger readers. I read it when I was too young for it - I ended up with terrible nightmares and even now I would not read it again. The ending really is a hideously violent surprise. I recommend parents read this book before giving it to their children. Due to the subject matter this book really is best suited to older children/teens, but due to Lowry being so popular with younger children (for Sam, Anastasia etc) there is a high likelihood that some children will read 'Autumn Street' before they are emotionally ready.

Dr. Paolo Sanzo is an assistant professor in the School of Kinesiology and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine at Lakehead University. A practicing physiotherapist at the Victoriaville Physiotherapy Centre in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Dr. Sanzo is also an examiner and instructor with the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
