About the Author

Clint Smith, P.E., is currently the CTO for Rivada Networks and has extensive experience in all aspects of fixed and mobile wireless telecommunications, including senior management, system design, project management, budgeting, implementation, operations, and sales. He is the author of several books published by McGraw-Hill Education, including Wireless Network Performance Handbook, 3G Wireless Networks, and Wireless Telecommunications FAQs. Mr. Smith has been awarded numerous patents related to wireless mobility and public safety. He also has specific design and operational experience with LTE, CDMA/1xRTT/EVDO, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA, TDMA, iDEN, AMPS, LMDS, WiMAX, WiFi, Microwave PtP, and public safety communications systems.

Daniel Collins, a 20-year veteran of the wireless communications industry, is currently Chief Technology Officer―Wireless at Jasper Wireless, Inc. He began his career at Ericsson, where he worked in product development and product management roles and helped develop some of the world’s earliest GSM networks. Mr. Collins also served as an independent consultant for many years on 2.5G, 3G, and IP technologies to tier-one service providers around the world, and worked with Alcatel North America as Vice President of Fixed Mobile Convergence. Sonja Arntzen is professor emerita of literature at the University of Toronto and the University of Alberta. She is the author of Ikkyu and the Crazy Cloud Anthology: A Zen Poet of Medieval Japan and The Kagero Diary: A Woman's Autobiographical Text from Tenth-Century Japan.

Dear Diary ...

I am by no means a scholar of the Heian period in Japanese history - far from it - but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is one among a precious handful of women's autobiographical writings from this era that have come down to us as diaries, memoirs, pillow books and poetry. It is simply amazing to reach across a chasm of 1,000 years and participate in a life so distant and foreign in time and place. And, it is surprisingly easy to relate to the thoughts and feelings expressed in these pages. People did a lot of crying and often said how sad they were - perhaps depression is not a particularly modern affliction?

My favorite book of the Heian period is the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon and I recommend that the "casual" reader start there. It's entertaining, informative and almost has a girlfriend feel as if she's sitting in your living room discussing the events of her day. Again, it's very cool to connect like that across a millennium! Forgive me, experts, for not dwelling on the finer points, but any interested person can get a lot out of these wonderful writings.

Outstanding interviews that really capture the essence of a starting a company

This book is a great read for people interested in startups and entrepreneurship, it's essentially 30+ case studies of how the founders think about their companies, what types of challenges they deal with, how they emotionally deal with them, etc. These founders discuss current issues such as the difficulty of fundraising, particularly in a down economy such as the one recently in 2009. Some of the interviews are very personal and talk about topics of personal and emotional struggle for the founders, I was surprised to read how detailed many of these interviews were. There's something for everyone considering the breadth of topics discussed and the diverseness of the founders-GitHub for example has a very different perspective on raising money than most of the other founders interviewed.

The depth in the interviews is impressive. I'm subscribed to a lot of different online web sites and I haven't found many interviews that go into this amount of depth before, though Mixergy comes to mind when I think of interviews in similar formats. I was surprised to see that many of the founders don't consider themselves successful today. The quote about Dennis Crowley from Foursquare made me realize that most of these guys are hungry and many of them mentioned continuously setting their own bar for achievement higher as they continued to grow (Weebly comes to mind).

I really enjoyed reading this. Since a lot of these startups are still relatively young, I think it's going to be interesting to see how they progress and look back at the interviews a few years down the road from now when they've developed a bit further. These interviews seem to be done at the right time, when the founders are young (which also makes it easy to relate to) and before they hit their massive adoption curves (again, easy to relate to since many entrepreneurs are in the same stage).

The Reality

This book helps not-yet-entrepreneurs understand what the process is really like. If you read stories about other entrepreneurs, you can get the sense that they always knew what they were doing, even though they were clueless at the time.

Interviewing a younger generation of founders really relates more the start ups young people will be starting now, rather than reading about jeff bezos, steve jobs, or bill gates.

Great information about startups

This book is a great source of information about how the founders of many successful startups think, how they responded to challenges, and insight into their personalities. A lot of startups face similar challenges, so if you're a founder (or an employee at a startup), learning from others can be very helpful. The book is easy to read in any order; each interview is self contained.

Founders at Work by Jessica Livingston, an earlier and fairly similar book, is also a great resource; Andrew Warner's Mixergy podcast is useful as well. If you are really interested in startups, I would suggest all three.

Addressing an obscure era in our native theater, McConachie (theater, Coll. of William and Mary) offers a Marxist critique of mid-19th century American society. Theater reflected dominant political and social attitudes of the period, he argues, and its audience changed over time. An elite, paternalistic, and mostly masculine group patronized fairy tale melodramas; then heroic and apocalyptic theater attracted a mixed class of spectators; finally, a family audience, including women for the first time, came to see moralistic dramas. Strong on social and textual criticism, McConachie's analysis nevertheless fails to bring the age alive. This is an important academic study--not much work has been done on the period--but it needs a scholar with imagination and storytelling power to re-create this tumultuous time. Recommended for professionals only.
