The argument John Anderson gives in this book was inspired by the passage above, from the last lecture by one of the pioneers of cognitive science. Newell describes what, for him, is the pivotal question of scientific inquiry, and Anderson gives an answer that is emerging from the study of brain and behavior.

Humans share the same basic cognitive architecture with all primates, but they have evolved abilities to exercise abstract control over cognition and process more complex relational patterns. The human cognitive architecture consists of a set of largely independent modules associated with different brain regions. In this book, Anderson discusses in detail how these various modules can combine to produce behaviors as varied as driving a car and solving an algebraic equation, but focuses principally on two of the modules: the declarative and procedural. The declarative module involves a memory system that, moment by moment, attempts to give each person the most appropriate possible window into his or her past. The procedural module involves a central system that strives to develop a set of productions that will enable the most adaptive response from any state of the modules. Newell argued that the answer to his question must take the form of a cognitive architecture, and Anderson organizes his answer around the ACT-R architecture, but broadens it by bringing in research from all areas of cognitive science, including how recent work in brain imaging maps onto the cognitive architecture.

About the Author

John R. Anderson is the R. K. Mellon University Professor of Psychology and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He has led the development of the ACT-R cognitive architecture and its applications, especially intelligent tutoring systems. Anderson has been recognized as a leader in the field of cognitive science by a number of awards, including the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Career Award, the David E. Rumelhart Prize for Contributions to the Formal Analysis of Human Cognition, the Howard Crosby Warren Medal for outstanding achievement in Experimental Psychology, and the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Cognitive Science. He has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is a past president of the Cognitive Science Society.

Excellent presentation of modelling human cognitive processes with production systems

This book presents a theory of human cognitive processes backed up by experimental data and relates this to the ACT-R production system development shell. I work with production systems using them to create practical real world applications. This book gave me much to think about with regards to the development work I do.

Hollywood beauty, wireless technology whiz

Hedy Lamarr was a Hollywood star, considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. She was also an inventor. These two disparate sounding facts would make anyone sit up and take notice. We are fortunate that a writer of the caliber of Richard Rhodes did notice. What he gives us is a fascinating account of Lamarr and her fellow inventor, musician George Antheil, as well as a host of other topics including evocative portraits of 1920s Vienna and Paris, insightful commentary on Hollywood and World War 2 and a crystal clear account of the technical details behind Lamarr and Antheil's key invention- spread-spectrum frequency hopping, a technique which can be used for jam-proof wireless communication in everything from submarine transmission to cell phones.

As is the case with his other commanding works, Rhodes is most adept at creating sharp character portraits of the main protagonists and an evocative recreation of the times that they lived in. He also offers a characteristically lucid account of science and technology reminiscent of the accounts in his landmark "The Making of the Atomic Bomb". Wherever possible he lets the characters speak in their own voices. He starts by describing Hedy's childhood in 1920s Vienna, a city that was a mecca for the arts and a sort of dream world for the young and ambitious. Acting was in Hedy's blood and with the encouragement of a doting father, she never looked back. After starring in a variety of roles, some scandalous for the times, she had the misfortune to marry a charming but opportunistic arms dealer who was cozy with fascists and Nazis and who turned Hedy into a trophy wife trapped in a golden cage. Endowed with an exceptionally keen mind and remarkable powers of observation, she soaked up discussions of weapons systems and armaments while attending lavish parties thrown by her husband. Even as she was expected to sit still and smile, she would carefully listen to descriptions of advances in military hardware from experts like the rocket and submarine pioneer Hellmuth Walter.

Tired of the growing brutality in Germany and trapped in an unhappy marriage, Lamarr fled to Paris, London and then to the United States where she was swept up right away by a Hollywood which was then eagerly showcasing immigrant European actors. Lamarr acted in a string of successful Hollywood movies and became known for her beauty, but the most consequential event in her life was her meeting with her California neighbor George Antheil, an avant garde musician who had spent the 1920s socializing with American expatriates in Paris and musicians like Igor Stravinsky. Like Lamarr, Antheil had an exceptional technical bent which he exploited in arranging complex combinations of player pianos and other musical instruments - an early analog version of orchestration and automated control. His "Ballet Mécanique" featuring a joyous panoply of diverse instruments and sounds had been a sensation in Paris. Apparently Lamarr first met Antheil for advice on breast augmentation since Antheil had written a few articles on the topic. But when she learnt about his background and mechanical inclination, the two struck up a close professional relationship and friendship (although Antheil was married and Rhodes finds it very unlikely that they were intimate). Distressed partly by the sinking of passenger ships by German submarines and wanting to use her secretly gained knowledge of weapons systems, Lamarr had an idea for transmitting radio signals to torpedoes to guide them to their target.

In those days, wireless transmission was risky since it was based on a single frequency which the enemy could intercept. Based on her understanding of these limitations gathered from listening on conversations that her ex-husband had had with military personnel, Lamarr came up with an idea for rapidly switching transmission and reception between various frequencies, thus thwarting easy attempts at detection. Knowing about Antheil's technical bent, she took the idea to him and together they filed a key patent laying out the features of the idea in 1942. While early incarnations of the invention involved manually switching the frequency, the design soon metamorphosed into one using piano rolls (with which Antheil was intimately familiar) to semi-automatically hop between different frequencies. An ingenious addition was the inclusion of three empty channels for broadcasting "dummy" frequencies devoid of information to further confuse the enemy's jamming attempts. After final refinements, Antheil and Lamarr made a presentation to the U.S. Navy which failed to take them seriously, partly because they found it hard to believe that a Hollywood actress and an avant garde musician could come up with such a novel idea. As usual, Rhodes is excellent when explaining the scientific background of radio communication and the novelty of the Lamarr-Antheil model.

The innovative and strategically key invention languished in the shadows until it was discovered out of necessity by the Navy which was looking for a way to enable jam-proof communication between ships and aircraft. It started to be implemented in a variety of important devices and systems and was used in the Bay of Pigs invasion. Today its remnants are used in a wide variety of communications technologies, from cell phone networks to sophisticated radar systems to GPS. In 1997 the Electronic Frontier Foundation gave Lamarr an award for her work. Hedy herself withdrew from public life and died in 2000; Antheil had sadly died long before in 1959 without being recognized for his contributions.

Perhaps the most revealing and saddening part of Rhodes's story is its description of how people failed to take Lamarr seriously as an inventor because she was a beautiful woman and a Hollywood actress. Lamarr herself used to say that her beauty was a curse, blinding people to any other talent she might have. In fact she was unlike most celebrities, eschewing parties and drinks and preferring quiet evenings filled with interesting conversations. Sadly, stereotypical views endure and beauty continues to be often regarded as incompatible with scientific or intellectual talents, especially among women. In a society that can value looks above everything else, Lamarr's story is a resounding counterexample and a role model for young girls that should help shatter stereotypes and reinforce the notion that disparate talents can manifest themselves in the same individual. Rhodes has picked an exceptionally interesting character to showcase this fact and he tells her story with verve, sympathy and clarity.

Fills in details and introduces early 20th century society

I loved it from beginning to end. Very well researched. I've known about Hedy's contribution to frequency hopping for over a decade. I have often brought it up in crypto classes I was teaching, but the book really filled in the details, showed the struggle, and the complexities. It wasn't just a woman writing a patent, and it wasn't just a one-time thing. She was an inventor! It's a shame they didn't take her patent more seriously during WWII, but glad she finally got her credit. I was really delighted and surprised to learn more about early 20th century society. Reading about all those riots made me think that today's rock-n-rollers aren't all that different from yesterday's musicians.

Since I nominated Her, its a Good and Accurate Book!

Since I was the individual who Nominated Hedy Lamarr for the Electronic Freedom Foundation Award in 1996 (which she got) and helped in the nomination for the prestigious Austrian Academy of Science award - her native country - which she also received, I was keen to see how accurate and balanced Richard Rhodes account was.

It was excellent and accurate on pages 112-114 where he describes my seminal role.

He was ALSO accurate and informative about 'Scibor Marchocki' ( pages 196-2040) the young Naval Technical Contractor who actually used her Patent in early 1950s to design the Naval 'Sonabuoy' to help detect hostile submarines - the VERY FIRST use of her 'frequency hopping' concept. When an old Scibor in 1996 read about the EFF award I got for her, he emailed me detailed information on when, how, and why he used her patent 50 years earlier. I provided that to Rhodes, who used it to accurately not not only describe the device, but also prove that her patent was actually used earlier than MANY try to claim.

So while I have been sent and seen many publications about her 'invention' Rhodes is both the most complete and accurate of them all.

Oh yeah, I might be a little biased, for when I was 13 years old in 1941, and she was 26 I was in love with her, from her pictures and movies.

So when I was doing heavy lifting for the National Science Foundation on wireless technologies in 1993 (I too was awarded the EFF Pioneer Award at the same time that Vint Cerf, technical founder of the internet, and Paul Baran, the founder of Packet Switching were honored too) when I ran across her patent and realized SHE was the originator of frequency hopping as a technical concept, that was then patented by she and George Anthiel.

I correctly surmised and learned from her son Tony she had NEVER been honored, much less enriched by her invention. So that is when I gave the love of my early life the honor she deserved.

And I still have the tape recording where she - at 82 - thanked all for being recognized - in her lilting Austrian voice.

Never Let You Go is a bit like the fantasy little girls dream up when young.

Never Let You Go is a wonderful follow up to Never Let You Fall. It's better than Never Let You Fall, which was a good debut with a strong foundation. The second book in the series allowed for the characters to really find their footing though.

Skye becomes more than a lost and broken girl. She's been thrust into a world, a life, she doesn't recall. She's had the weight of that world firmly secured to her shoulders but instead of hiding from it, she runs head first into it. She braves the unknown by herself. Determined to seek answers, find a way to better everything with not one person she cares for falling in the process. Lofty, and unrealistic, goals. But goals that come from a true heart, none the less.

However, seeking this path takes her away from Xander. Her guardian, her love, one of the few people she can truly trust. Yet it forces her into the life of Nikoli, a man who grew up with the idea of Skye. With the idea that she was his future and he's willing to fight for that idea.

Now, I usually run from love triangles of any kind. The aggravate me. I am not a fan of the idea that you can be in love with more than one person at a time. Yes, in love. I understand you can love multiple but the distinction between love and in love...is great. Here is where I bow down to the graceful way in which Miller produced this dramatic entanglement.

There was no simpering girl who just can't decide what path her heart wants to take. Sky thinks with her brain while still feeling with her heart. The progression of her and Nikoli's relationship is natural, it felt real and comforting. Her estrangement from Xander, just as real. Painful, beautiful but REAL. That's what this complication felt like. And it, surely, a complication.

Xander and Sky have a forbidden soul mate type love. A love that can make a heart soar or, possibly, burn a kingdom to the ground.

Beyond the love story, Never Let You Go is a bit like the fantasy little girls dream up when young. It has the castle, the prince, the villains (that I wanted to take sharp objects to on many occasions), epic fight scenes, fantastical ethereal beings and an underlying deeper meaning.

I enjoyed this part of the story and eagerly wait for more.

Incredible journey

There really isn't much I can say about this book that isn't a spoiler in one way or another. But here is what I can tell you about the story (besides that it's freaking awesome), at the end of Never Let You Fall we know Skye sneaks off to face the new king on her own. Leaving Xander to fear for her life. Xander doesn't give up easily and gives chase as soon as he realizes what danger she's put herself in... and danger is exactly what she get's. But it is not just the danger of losing her life and her kingdom that she has to fight, she also has to fight the danger of losing her heart.

From the second I picked up Never Let You Go I was sucked in to the story of Xander and Skye, instantly pissed at Skye for her decision to leave without her guardian... and within the first few pages I was yelling at my kindle telling Skye that she was being stupid and that she needed to turn her butt around and go back to the safe arms of Xander. But I know she won't do that, it would be too easy and Skye is stubborn. Oh sure she leaves for the right reasons, to protect the ones she loves, but that doesn't make me want to smack her any less. And when her life is put in danger I quickly reminded Skye that she should have listened to me. (But you know, it's a book and she can't hear me so... it was basically me just yelling at my kindle... A LOT!)

By the end of the first ten chapters I was questioning everything that I thought I knew about the story. Like Skye I was confused and wondering which side was truly right and which side I should trust. Luckily we figure that out, but not before wicked wreaks havoc on Skye, her heart and mine. Never Let You Go was one huge emotional mountain after another. Every time I thought my heart was going to get a break, Michele G. Miller went and did something to trip me up. No matter how much I sat staring at my kindle bleary eyed, crying no, no, no, no, like a broken record I loved this story. I needed this story. I needed the characters. Skye's independence and stubbornness. Xander's dependability and pure intent. While I also needed the thirst to hate. I needed to be able to take my anger out on someone in this book and Michele G. Miller definitely gave me that. In fact she gave me quite a few people to hate. Although one I love to hate. I'm sure a lot of people love him, but as a dedicated fan of a certain hot and sexy guardian I cannot betray my heart. Oh sure he is fine and all, strong, loyal, trustworthy.... and all that but he is no XANDER plain and simple. (I know you are all looking at my like I've lost it, but trust me when you read this book it will all fall into place and you will realize the love hate thing).

During the crazy ride of Never Let You Go we learn quite a bit about our wonderful characters. Wonderful things... things that I definitely didn't expect (yea that happens a lot), we see each of the characters grow and face struggles and trials that test who they are and shape who they will forever become. Shocking truths are revealed, secrets are kept, and decisions are made that will impact the very future of every person in Tyalbrook. I still can't get over how topsy turvy this story was. Michele G. Miller really did keep me and my heart guessing until the very end.

Never Let You Go was and simply is beautiful! It made me question everything I thought I wanted, I knew. It had me tied in knots, it made me cry... A LOT, it made me yell, hate, love, and it left me in total shock! There was no way that I saw that ending coming, no freaking way! The road that this story is headed down is going to be a very twisted and bumpy one indeed. I for one am going to buy a ticket, buckle up and just hang on for the wild ride. Won't you join me in this adventure???

I love this series and author!

Favorite Lines “Be careful, my Princess…you will lose all you love before you can win what you want.”

“I won't let you fall. You will not die for me. I can't live with that Xander, and I’ll let them take me before I let them kill you."
I wanted to argue with her, but she held up her hand to stop my protests.
"Don't argue it. There’s no point. I've made up my mind."
So I’d made another promise to her. One I fully intended to keep. "If anything happens to you…if we get separated, if you martyr yourself – anything, Skye. As long as I am breathing, I will always find you. Always!”

“I have been waiting for you for so long now, and I am still shocked to have you here,”

“I’m in your arms…I am home.”

“Yes. Our proof that we were made to be forever tangled up with each other.”

Man this author! She's something else! I patiently waited for what we become of Skye and that yummy Guardian Xander BUT never could I have come up with Miller did! It was FANTABULOUS! In true Skye fashion she crept away in the night to save Xander and her friends from being in harms way. What she doesn't expect is to meet Nickoli, he is suppose to be the enemy but Skye can't help but feels he can trust him! I will admit I don't like Nickoli, I know I know that's horrible of me to say but darn it Skye belongs with Xander!!

Then Skye's world gets crushed and Nickoli is there for her, I still don't want him anywhere near our girl!
I won't tell you the parts that made me stop breathing, the parts that made me cry like my world was shattering, or they parts that made me see red but, know that while I was reading this book I felt all those emotions and it was all thanks to Miller's amazing writing that made me feel those things!
She is an amazing writer and this book is epic! So is the ending! That being said I'm jumping up and down with wanting to know what happens next but, this book will hold me off while I wait.
Great Book GREAT Series Great (and yummy) Xander and Amazing Skye! If you love action, love, family, and magic then Never Let You Go is for you.

The novel Dan Brown would write if he was an occultist

Let me be honest at the outset. I know both the authors, and I share their deep interest in the Western Mystery Tradition---but I am also a professional writer of adventure fiction, and I recognize a good, well-crafted genre novel when I read one. The Dark Brotherhood by Paul Clark and Cindy Forbes is a top-notch professional effort. It's a page-turner with all the elements a good thriller must have: action, mystery, suspense, believable characters acting in credible settings with convincing motivation. Most novels of this type are written by authors who have only a superficial knowledge of occultism and magick. Clark and Forbes know the practical end of what they write about. Their protagonist Arthur Alexander is what Dan Brown's Prof. Robert Langdon would secretly like to be: a real magician - and he matches wit and talent with equally well qualified villains from this and other dimensions. We have a fast-moving plot with a rich mix of modern and gothic elements, including a mysterious Eastern European monastery, inhabited by satanic monks, that only appears on certain dark, stormy nights, an ancient grimoire that unlocks the gate to the klippoth, a "blasting rod" passed down through the centuries, and a demon as terrifying and blood-thirsty as any Lovecraft could have imagined. We also have a hot, karate-kicking female CIA agent who missed cross-training by SyOps at Ft. Bragg. She does not know how to stare at goats, so Arthur Alexander has to give her on-the-job training. This even includes a quick run-down on M-Theory, telepathy, and radiathesia. None of this gets in the way of the story. It enhances the credibility of the otherwise incredible phenomena, letting the reader share in the experiences rather than simply observe them. The suspense mounts steadily to a dramatic climax in which the demon.....but no spoilers. Get it and enjoy the ride.

The Dark Brotherhood is a fine example of the classic occult thriller. It is fast-paced and entertaining, with well-defined, complex characters. The authors are well-known esoteric teachers and manage to slip in some teaching amidst the fiction. I look forward to the next volume in this series!

Dr. Tavener meets the Lost Symbol

The Dark Brotherhood was extremely fun to read, was very informative and entertaining. This is a cross between Dr. Tavener and the Lost Symbol/DaVinci Code. Each chapter left you wanting more, creating a great sense of suspense and wonder. At the same time a large amount of true Occult and Mystical information was given out. I highly recommend this book to any and all that are remotely interested in the subjects of Occultism, Magic, Psychism, and Mysticism as well as anyone looking for a great fun thriller, detective, with a bit of horror book to read. I'm having several of my high school students read it. Excellent!

After reading this book I began to look at certain things within myself that I could change. As women we sometimes do things out of habit without a second thought. After reading this book I am now more conscious of certain things that I do.

Some of the information and rules I did not totally agree with but for the most part the book made me think about past and future relationships. I liked the book, it was entertaining and it was an easy read.

Interesting. I found I was reading about myself in some of the chapters. Didn't really find Out anything new, but sometimes we tend to forget and need someone to remind us of these things again.
