About the Author
Dr. William Boyes is professor of economics at Arizona State University. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the Claremont Graduate School in 1974. Before joining the Arizona State faculty, he was the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Business at Weber State University; visiting professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and the University of London, London, England, and lectured at ITAM in Mexico City; and was the dean of the College of Business at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Dr. Boyes has also served as chairman of the Economics Department at ASU and has been an economist with Security Pacific National Bank (now Bank of America). He has been a consultant to the White House, the Commerce Department, the Federal Trade Commission, and several private firms. He is the director of the office of economic education at ASU and a member of the Pacific Research Institute's Academic Advisory Board. Dr. Boyes has received many teaching awards, including the Golden Key National Honor Society Outstanding Professor Award at ASU in 1988, the Outstanding Teacher in the MBA Program Award at ASU in 1994, the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Business Award at ASU in 1995, Huizingh Outstanding Honors Professor in 2007, and Outstanding MBA Professor in 2008.

Michael Melvin is currently Head of Currency Research at Barclays Global Investors. He also retains affiliations at the Arizona State University Department of Economics and the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Melvin received his Ph.D. in economics from UCLA in 1980. He has served as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Board and the International Monetary Fund, was a Fulbright Professor at the University of Frankfurt, and has been a visiting professor at UCLA, Northwestern University, U.C. San Diego, and the University of Hawaii. His field of specialization is International Finance, and he is the coeditor of the Journal of International Money and Finance.

Endearing historical romance

Grace Livingston Hill (1865-1947) was the author of many Christian romance novels. "Marcia Schuyler", which was based on a true story passed down in Mrs. Hill's family, takes place in the early 1830's. The Schuyler family is preparing for the marriage of oldest daughter Kate to David Spafford. The night before the wedding, Kate elopes with another man. A scandal is narrowly avoided when Marcia's father offers her hand in marriage to David. In shock and stunned by Kate's desertion, David agrees. Marcia is young, no more than seventeen or eighteen, and her love for David is that of a sister for a brother. The newlyweds set up housekeeping but occupy separate bedrooms. Gradually their feelings for each other blossom into true love. But those who wish them harm cast a shadow over their happiness. Kate, all but deserted by her naval husband, re-enters David's life and plots to get him back. Will she succeed or will David realize what a treasure he has in Marcia?

Same blog topics in a book format

I was disappointed in this book. I've followed Andrew's blog for at least a year during which time I was in a long-term relationship. Now I am single and thought this book would provide some helpful insight on breakups. Andrew indicated that the book would include new material not covered on his blog. However, the book does in fact contain at least 40% of the same material that is included on his blog. The book chapters even have the same titles as some of his blog posts. Examples include: Stop letting him waste your time, You are responsible for your own romantic happiness, The importance of silence after a breakup, What to do when he contacts you, etc.

There are 46 chapters and each are 1-3 pages long. So the reader should expect that the author writes each chapter in the format of a blog post as opposed to providing in-depth insight into various facets/factors of abreakup. I also believe that the author's perspective is his own opinion and are generalizations at best. I appreciate his insight on some topics but I feel duped in purchasing his book since it is simply a regurgitation of his blog.

All women should read this book, ideally when they are young--18, maybe even 16.

I'm a longtime follower of Andrew's blog. His insight helped me understand that I was handling my own breakup appropriately by cutting contact and moving on, even though I was absolutely heartbroken. He is excellent at presenting his readers with a healthy dose of reality in an accessible way.

The book was hard to put down--it is impeccably written & organized, and the style is clear and concise. It contains all the information you need to stay strong and act with confidence and grace in the face of rejection, be it a minor disappointment early on in the dating process or the emotionally devastating loss of a longtime love.

This is an excellent handbook for navigating post-breakup relationship dynamics. I'm lending this to several friends, and I'll make sure that any future daughters of mine read it!

Incredibly Useful

I'm generally incredibly appreciative of RealTalk, and this book provides a valuable dose of it.

Andrew writes about what I think might actually be the male subconscious mind regarding relationships. A lot of men will deny the things he discusses to be true, but time and time again I see them acting out these patterns both in my own life, and in others. There's a good chance 10% of the material discussed in here is simply Andrew's anecdota only, but 90% at least is actionable fact which makes it a fantastic source.

I decided a little over two years ago that finding a life partner was urgent, and a task requiring much more effort than the blase it-will-happen-when-it's-the-right-time-attitude I was giving it. I read Andrew's blog posts as insight on how to navigate it. After reading this book I suggest you read his blog as well. I even recommend this book to those currently in relationships as I now suspect that 80% of my friends in my rather considerable network wouldn't be in their miserable relationships if they had some of the information herein.

Now for my turn at RealTalk. This book can be a huge hit to your self-esteem. It shouldn't be, but it's hard to read some of this and not draw unassailable conclusions on just how indifferent some men in your life have been towards you. I would even go so far to say it's upsetting so don't read if you think you are exceptionally delicate or down on dating. Make sure you have a clear head. Definitely DO read this at some point, but know that it's only uplifting in that "at least I know better now" way instead of that Hollywood-ending way.

Clint Smith, P.E., is currently the CTO for Rivada Networks and has extensive experience in all aspects of fixed and mobile wireless telecommunications, including senior management, system design, project management, budgeting, implementation, operations, and sales. He is the author of several books published by McGraw-Hill Education, including Wireless Network Performance Handbook, 3G Wireless Networks, and Wireless Telecommunications FAQs. Mr. Smith has been awarded numerous patents related to wireless mobility and public safety. He also has specific design and operational experience with LTE, CDMA/1xRTT/EVDO, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA, TDMA, iDEN, AMPS, LMDS, WiMAX, WiFi, Microwave PtP, and public safety communications systems.

Daniel Collins, a 20-year veteran of the wireless communications industry, is currently Chief Technology Officer―Wireless at Jasper Wireless, Inc. He began his career at Ericsson, where he worked in product development and product management roles and helped develop some of the world’s earliest GSM networks. Mr. Collins also served as an independent consultant for many years on 2.5G, 3G, and IP technologies to tier-one service providers around the world, and worked with Alcatel North America as Vice President of Fixed Mobile Convergence.
