PW gave a starred review to this "balanced, comprehensive and age-appropriate" explanation of death and its emotional aftermath, featuring the amiable cast from Dinosaurs Divorce. Ages 4-8.

Ages 5^-8. Unlike many books on death for little ones, this one doesn't tell a story. Instead, it addresses children's fears and curiosity head-on, and in a largely secular fashion, by answering some very basic questions: "Why does someone die?" "What does dead mean?" "What comes after death?" Other questions deal with emotions, and there's a section about death customs (the weakest part of the book). The forthright approach makes the subject seem less mysterious and provides kids with plenty to think about and discuss with their parents. It's the brightly colored artwork, however, that will really enable children to relax with the concept. The pictures are filled with homey clutter and familiar detail, and the activities of the appealingly quirky characters (who resemble dinosaurs in only the broadest way) add a strong, comforting sense of what can only be called normalcy. From Kirkus Reviews
In the newest title in their sensible, upbeat self-help series, the Browns (Dinosaurs to the Rescue, 1992, etc.) take on the subject of death. Crowded cartoons plunge right in, with terse explanations of what it means to be living and how death is part of the cycle. Any philosophical bent soon gives way to illustrations showing a hospital patient hooked up to tubes, premature babies too small to survive, and accident victims (complete with EMS vehicles and IVs), as well as loss of life in war, as the result of social problems, and through suicide. Confusing for a picture-book audience may be the juxtaposition, in one spread, of play with a toy gun--``Bang, bang. You're dead''--with a real dead bird. Feeling, funerals, reincarnation, resurrection, sitting shivah--the few things that don't make it into the text (autopsy, wake) can be found in the glossary. The coverage sometimes raises more questions than it answers (a youngster worries about family finances, only to be soothed by a parent), but just as Dinosaurs Divorce (1986) stressed the continuing love between parents and children, this book, too, has at its center a positive message: Grieve, and go on with living. Kind of intense
By Amy McGhee
I think that When Dinosaurs Die does a good job of covering a wide range of potential causes of death: it talks about how some people die after being sick for a long time, some die suddenly, some die accidentally, some are very young, some die as a result of war, others die from drug abuse or suicide. I can see this being a great resource for counselors, or families undergoing a loss that isn't talked about in other types of children's books on death. Our situation was fairly conventional, so when my two-year-old daughter and I read this book, I heavily edited a lot of the parts about suicide, drug abuse, neonatal death, etc. And we touched very lightly on the illustration of the dinosaur who has been run over by a car--it wasn't quite graphic, but was enough to give me pause. But again, if we were facing that sort of situation, then I think the book would be comforting, and would reassure kids that they're not alone.
My favorite parts of the book were where it talked about what it means to be alive and what it means to be dead, and how all living things grow and eventually die. It was written in very basic, straightforward language that made the subject less mysterious for kids, and as a parent, it helped me make sure I covered all of the important points. (I had never thought to point out, for example, that dead people don't eat or see or hear anymore, but while reading the book realized that this might not be something that young kids would intuitively grasp.)
With its one size fits all approach, this book may be more than you need if your young child is dealing with the sad but conventional death of a grandparent. However, by encompassing so many different kinds of death, this book has something to offer every grieving family.

Great book to explaind eath.

My father recently passed away and my almost 3 yeard old son has had a hard time understanding where Grandpa has gone. I was trying to find a book to help him understand.
This book was recomended to me by my local hospice. I ordered the book and was pleased with it.
It uses Dinosaurs as the characters which I think makes it less scary then people IMO. It covers all kinds of deaths such as old age, illness, suicide, infant/child death etc.. It also covers various different burial and funeral practices from different ethnicities and religions.
Personally, I skipped the parts I deemed inapropriate for him at his age but like that it covers a broad spectrum so we can always resort back to this book in the future for other deaths.
A great book written with the utmost sensitivity.
