Both a remarkable photographic record of a vanished landscape of 19th-century architecture, and an angry polemic against the cavalier destruction of hundreds of grand buildings, this is the latest record of magnificent buildings from previous centuries that for a variety of reasonsbut above all cavalier demolition by 20th-century planners devoted to the cause of modernismare now no more, and exist only in heartbreakingly poignant photographs. This latest chronicles an astonishing and depressing array of the finest Victorian architecture all sacrificed to the wrecking ball, from the Euston Arch to Preston Town Hall, from a great country house like Trentham in Staffordshire to a fine Victorian church like St. Jude's in London’s Red Lion Square. Here are public baths, railway termini and hotels, town houses, factories, banks, law courtsall buildings that, if threatened today, would soon see calls for restoration. But it's too latephotographs are all we have left. Gavin Stamp's indignant and scholarly text looks back at the circumstances of their loss, and analyzes the 20th-century mind set that could hold so many magnificent buildings in such little regard.

Review
'Gavin Stamp, one of our most distinguished architectural historians, has done a depressing but important public service in cataloguing this odious chapter of destruction.' The Telegraph 'Gavin Stamp's Lost Victorian Britain contains many pictures of the fine architecture that a postwar generation delighted in destroying. In a brilliant essay, Stamp blames aesthetic snobbery and a frenzy of self-hatred.' -- Ian Jack The Guardian 'This is an important book. ...It is well written, full of passion and illustrations of all the lost buildings.' Books Choice, Oxford Times 'This look at the Victorian buildings destroyed in the 20th century makes for heartbreaking reading' The Sunday Times '...a poignant, well informed book that depressed and delights in equal measure.' Manchester Evening News 'A photographic account of the Victorian buildings demolished in 20th-century reforms makes for moving reading' -- Simon Jenkins Culture, The Sunday Times '...a powerful and compelling indictment of the destruction of numerous magnificent Victorian buildings' -- Marcus Binney The Times 'an excellent book' Literary Review * 'A forceful and passionate reclamation of an era so long regarded as unfashionable.' Sunday Herald

Brilliantly sad
By David A. Clarke
If you suffer from high blood pressure, depression or melancholia then don't buy this book. While Stamp's text and selection of photographs are outstanding - his account of the destruction of so much of our built heritage is engaging and factual and many of the accompanying photographs are achingly beautiful - I could barely control my anger as I read episode after episode of ignorant, irrational and sometimes malevolent destruction of buildings that would now be worth, celebrated, used and enjoyed so much more than the trash that almost invariably replaced them. This book is an indictment of so-called planning that has no appreciation of the beauty, history or human scale of a building or locality. It is also a (silent) indictment of modern architecture's banality and sterility.
A superb book about a very sad subject.
