From the Author
Greetings, Readers! I'm honored you're interested in my debut novel from Mountainview Books, The Calling of Ella McFarland--a labor of love. The heroine is named for my grandmother AND granddaughter--both named Ella Jane. The story line reflects much of my ancestors' lives of hardship, faith, and grit in Indian Territory prior to Oklahoma statehood. My great-grandparents were permit settlers in the Chickasaw Nation of Indian Territory in the 1890s. Their eldest child, my grandmother Ella Jane Pyle, grew to adulthood in the Pauls Valley area, which is where she met my grandfather, William T. Banks. Their marriage certificate was issued in Garvin County in 1904. They farmed in the same general area, welcoming 7 girls over the succeeding years and burying 4. Papa died of typhoid alongside their sixth daughter Eula in 1922. The novel's story line follows independent-spirited Ella Jane McFarland, a farmer's daughter in need of a steady income and connections, as she finds herself on the cusp of reaching her lifelong dream: a teaching position at prestigious Worthington School for Girls. As the statehood, woman's suffrage, and temperance debates are raging, God may have unexpected plans for Ella Jane. Besides, one strikingly handsome gentleman on the Worthington board has caught her eye. Will Ella learn to listen for God's voice amid the turmoil? I hope you'll read The Calling of Ella McFarland and let me know what you think about Ella's journey and her important--and sometimes stunning--choices.Linda

A BEAUTIFUL WALTZ THROUGH TURN OF THE CENTURY AMERICA
By Grandmother of Six
Ella McFarland is a woman ahead of her time--not exactly a feminist, but certainly a forward thinker. Her faith in God and in her calling to help the downtrodden are exemplary. The love story is romantic and appealing. Written in language befitting of the historical time period, the details are rich and well-researched. Quotes such as " 'Blessedness has nothing at all to do with anything I've done. It has everything to do with God's goodness...'" and " 'You've drunk from a bitter cup. But if you'll drink the Balm of Gilead, He'll seep into the lifeblood of your soul and sweeten the gall in ways a sugared cup can't' " reflect the deep theology and themes of forgiveness and restoration which meander through the story. Or consider this beautiful description: "...she threaded a length of black through the needle. Even the moss rose design required dark threads. For depth. For interest. So like life."
This award-winning debut novel by Linda Brooks Davis is exceptional and I highly recommend it to those who swoon over historical romance.

Set in a turbulent time with many uncertainties but anchored by faith and purpose.
By R. Mark Sharp
This is not my favorite genre. However, my wife loves it and happened to like this particular book a lot. I read it as well and enjoyed the story, the setting, and the writing skill of the author. I appreciated the character development in response to events within the book. I enjoy reading of noble characters who can have great influence on others. The writing is clear and flows well. The message is of grace, trust, dedication, and purpose.
After some reflection, I changed my rating from 4 to 5 stars. The only reason I rated it 4 stars is that this is not my favorite genre. (I prefer nonfiction). However, when compared to other books within this genre, it is easily 5 stars because of the quality of the story, writing, and message.
